Soldier almost beaten to death for stealing phone in Delta

The thieving soldier being handed over to the police

A serving soldier with the Nigeria Army escaped death by the whiskers at the hands of an angry mob in Warri, Delta State, for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

According to Daily Post, the soldier was caught after a lady he stole a phone from at gun point, recognized him at a popular shopping complex in the oil-rich city, called Robson G. Shopping Plaza, located on Okumagba Avenue, and raised an alarm.
The soldier, sensing that he could be lynched to death, tried to escape the scene with a knife in his hand but he was caught by the mob before he could run away and was given the beating of his life, leaving him almost dead before he was rescued by the police.
The policemen reportedly escorted the thieving soldier to the residence of former Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. David Ejoor, to confirm if he was truly a personnel of the Nigerian Army.
It was learned that the Army personnel on guard at the residence of the retired officer dispersed the angry mob and refused to hand over the soldier to police officers from the Nigeria Police Force ‘B’ Division in Warri.
But when an Army van later came, the culprit was whisked away to the Nigerian Army Barrack, 3 Battalion, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.
