A middle-aged man has been reportedly shot dead by armed robbers at his mother's funeral in Ute-Erumu Community, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
The deceased whose name has been withheld was reportedly killed when armed robbers invaded the burial ceremony and began shooting sporadically into the air, allowing them to rob guests at the funeral.
The deceased mother of the victim who died at age 86 was being buried when the news of the ceremony got to the hoodlums.
As guests scrambled for their lives, a stray bullet hit the victim in the chest, killing him instantly.
According to an eyewitness, the police in Owa Oyibu Division swung into action following a tip off and successfully arrested one of the armed robbery suspects.
The Police Commissioner in the state, Mr Zanna Ibrahim, confirmed the incident and said that the arrested suspect has given them information which would help the police with their investigations.
According to him, the suspect identified as Osaro Igie, claimed to have joined the robbery gang out of frustration and hunger.
He added that the suspect would be charged to the court upon the completion of the investigations.
