Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, striker Marcus Rashford and other members of the squad wore black armbands to mourn seven fans who died at a viewing centre in Nigeria.
According to the official police report, a high-tension cable which fell inside the viewing centre in Calabara killed seven people and injured several others who were watching Manchester United’s Europa League game against Anderlecht.
To pay tribute to the
fans in Nigeria, Manchester United players led by captain Rooney all
wore black armbands in their 1-1 home draw with Swansea on Sunday, April 30.
Manchester United have been following the development in Nigeria since the tragic incident happened in Calabar on April 20.
The morning after the incident, the club released a statement on Twitter which reads; “Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday.”
Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan also sent out a condolence message for the victims.
Wearing the black armbands could not, however, inspire Manchester United as they were held at home by Swansea 1-1.
